10-Step Accessibility Challenge

Explore an accessibility training course I created for UND faculty, staff, and students in Blackboard.

The Context

  • The Problem: UND faculty and staff were unaware of accessibility best practices 

  • The Solution: Develop a self-paced course in Blackboard Ultra

The Audience

  • UND faculty, staff, and students

  • No technical knowledge

  • Unfamiliar with digital accessibility

Challenge Outcomes

By the end of the training course, I wanted participants to be able to do all of the following:

  • Identify and use accessibility checkers and tools like Blackboard Ally to check the accessibility of their course resources

  • Identify common acessibility issues in digital documents and resources

  • Fix common accessibility issues in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Blackboard Ultra

  • Use easy workarounds to PDFs (permalinks and original documents)

  • Edit video captions in YuJa

Tools & Technologies

I used the following to create each module:

  • Blackboard Ultra Documents

  • Blackboard Ultra Tests

  • Camtasia (to create video content)

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

  • YuJa Canva (to create module thumbnails)

  • Microsoft Word
